Traditional Japanese weapons such as the Katana and the Wakizashi are forged from a special type of steel known as Tamahagane. The production technique of this steel reached Japan via Korea and China and is estimated to be more than a thousand years old. The name Tamahagane can be translated as “jewel steel” or “jade steel,” referring to the purity and value of the material. Unlike modern steel, Tamahagane is not made from iron ore but from Japanese iron sand, known as satetsu, which forms the basis of this unique production process.

The Tatara Process and the Production of Tamahagane

The satetsu is smelted in a traditional clay furnace called a Tatara, reaching temperatures of up to approximately 1500 degrees Celsius. During this process, charcoal is added, which is essential for controlling the carbon content and hardness of the steel. A Tatara furnace usually operates for about three weeks, with a full production cycle taking seven days. At the end of the process, the furnace walls are broken down, leaving behind a steel mass called kera. This mass contains both high- and low-carbon sections, allowing swordsmiths to select steel suitable for creating swords with the optimal balance of hardness and flexibility.

The Craftsmanship Behind Tamahagane

What sets Tamahagane apart from modern industrial steel is its entirely artisanal production. Every step is done by hand and requires years of experience. Mastery of temperature control, timing, and carbon distribution is crucial to the final quality. After production, the steel is carefully selected. Not every piece is suitable for use in a sword, so smiths break the material apart to inspect its internal structure and only use the finest sections.

The production of Tamahagane is strictly regulated in Japan, and only a few furnaces are legally allowed to operate, often just once a year. The iron sand for Tamahagane was mainly sourced from regions such as Izumo (present-day Shimane), parts of Honshu, and other mountainous and water-rich areas. Furnaces were built in remote locations near forests for charcoal and water sources. Production required the collaboration of dozens of people and weeks of intensive labor, which explains why Tamahagane has always been rare and valuable.
